Explorer Program
In January 2002, Orange County Fire Rescue started an Explorer Program. The Explorer program is designed for young people interested in the Fire and Rescue field. It allows individuals to learn about the many aspects involved within the fire service. Members participate in training classes, community events, department drills, trips, competitions and will ride along with Fire Rescue crews throughout Orange County. By being a member of this program, we hope to broaden your outlook into the Fire Service as a possible career.
Requirement

  • 14 through 20 years of age. 
  • Currently enrolled in a scholastic institution with at least a "C" average 
  • Members must agree to not use tobacco products. 
  • Good moral character. 
  • Pass a medical examination
Orientation

At announced times during the year, Orange County Fire Rescue will hold an Explorer Orientation Recruit Class. This course will prepare the Explorer Applicant for entrance into the program.

Recruits will receive training in CPR, emergency medical services, first aid, fire department history and traditions, department operations and physical training.

This course will take place at the Central Florida Fire Academy located at Mid Florida Tech located at Oakridge and John Young Parkway.
Events

The Explorer program will hold many events in addition to the scheduled meetings and training drills. These events will cover a wide range of topics.

Some will be to educate the public in fire safety; others will be to learn about different areas of the Fire Rescue service.
Every aspect of the program is designed to cover at least one of the core components: Career Opportunities, Life Skills, Service Learning, Character Education and Leadership Experiences. 
Ride Along Program

Explorers will be scheduled to ride along with Fire and Rescue crews throughout Orange County. Explorers will assist crews with specific duties as well as learn tasks and functions.
